What to do when you find a stray

Here is a helpful website about how to deal with stray animals.
There are some very practical ideas:
  • Firstly- keep the SPCA's number, (Grahamstown- 046-622-3233),or any other rescue number on your phone.
  • Remember that the animal is probably frightened and any sudden or threatenin movements will scare it away or lead to you being  bitten. So be careful and approach it slowly. Often talking to the animal in a low, calm and reassuring voice will help.
  • If possible-call a friend who can help you-stray animals run very fast-it's better to work in a team!
  • If you manage to catch the animal-check for name tags&if it has one-call the owner or local SPCA and notify them that you have found their animal.
  • If you can't catch it call the SPCA who are more experienced in dealing with the animals.
  • You have to understand that anywhere you take the animal will have funding restraints and will only be able to peform certain operations and treatments- they may have to put the animal down. Come to terms with it-it is a sad, horrible part of life-unless you are willing to pay for all its treatments yourself.
  • Most importantly- be careful!Safety first for you and the animal!
